The research article explored the potential of high density transcranial alternating current stimulation to reverse some of the working memory deficits seen in older adults (age 60-76). Authors carried out 4 set of separate experiments to validate the protocol and to rule out potential confounds. First experiment had both young and old adults who performed working memory tasks under sham and stimulation conditions.
Older adults performed the task with less accuracy which got boosted after stimulation session. Study design was powerful - Double blind, sham controlled and within subjects. Functional connectivity measures (Phase lag index, PAC- Phase amplitude coupling and phase synchronization) and behavioral measures(accuracy and reaction times) were assessed. The study used cluster permutation based statistics. Each experiment presented was critically questioned and generated lots of discussions.
